Not Alone. #YAsaves

Current Theme Song (aka what's playing on my ipod right now): Whole Wide World by Mindy Gledhill.

I think this post is more for me than anyone else. In fact, I know it is. Over the weekend, I missed an internet explosion. The Wall Street Journal printed an article that I still don't have words for, and launched a firestorm in response. The best thing that came out of it by far was the hashtag #YAsaves, meaning saves lives, not destroys them. The biggest and most common thing I saw was that YA showed them that they were not alone. Many were also sent to the WSJ's twitter account. I hope they listen. Here are just a few I saw and kept, because I needed them to remind me, because these should not be forgotten.

This is why I write YA.

  1. It's amazing how strong the YA community is, isn't it? I hope the WSJ realizes the mistake they made in allowing such an ignorant article to be published with their name attached to it.

  2. Sandy - It is incredibly amazing, but even more so is the people behind it, authors and readers alike, but especially the readers. In so many ways they are my real heroes.

Thank you so much for your comment.

  4. It's obvious the author of the wsj editorial did not actually read any of the books in question, or else she would have been unable to miss the messages of hope that almost all these "dark" YA books spread.

I'd be fine with her expressing her opinion of books she'd actually read, but this smacks of the worst kind of censorship. The IGNORANT kind.

Thanks for sharing these tweets, Heather!

  5. Ugh, it's amazing how biased and un-educated some journalists are in some topics.

I'm glad people are standing up to the WSJ...it makes me mad when media outlets are willing to publish things that do not have the proper backing...and I love it even more when people call them out on it (this coming from a Communication major in college).

Thanks for sharing the Tweets, at least there are some sane people in the world! :)

  7. I got a little teary eyed reading your compilation of tweets. I don't keep up on twitter, so I appreciate your sharing them. I agree, YAsaves
